Let's talk about what we can do, virtually and in this moment, for the youth in our community.

Consider how overwhelming and challenging our lives have been over the last 12 months - - parents, teachers, employers, and community members, all needing to come together to ensure our children continue to develop and progress, in safe environments.

NOW, can you fathom providing the level of educational support needed for your children when you are struggling to even provide shelter?

Joining in 'virtually' on this Lace Up Son 5k, as a participant or by making a donation, can contribute immediate positive impact on an amazing group of students in CMS, who happen to also be homeless.

One of the ways the Steve Smith Family Foundation is positively impacting our Charlotte community during the pandemic, is through a Virtual Learning Academy for homeless CMS Students. This Lace Up Son 5K is an important event to raise funds needed to continue to support these students, as well as provide support services for displaced families through other crucial community partnerships, including but not limited to health and Domestic Violence.

Virtual Learning Center - Steve Smith Family Foundation

In Charlotte, the McKinney-Vento Program addresses the needs of homeless students attending Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) by addressing challenges and issues affecting their success in school. Reports show that homeless children are more likely to perform below grade level in math and reading. Currently, there are close to 5,000 students in CMS that are homeless.

HOMELESS CHILDREN & VIRTUAL LEARNING:

Through a partnership with Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools and their McKinney Vento program, and in collaboration with the Urban League of Central Carolinas, SSFF has committed to supporting children through virtual learning support, personally dedicated cubicle workspaces, tutoring, PPE, headphones, school supplies, meals, transportation, and healthy exercise.
